This museum formed on social bases in 1978, started its activity as a state organization since February 1, 1982. The museum, which has a history of 30 years, is functioning as an advanced culture establishment at present. About seven thousand rare exhibits have been gathered in the museum during this time. There are 2 departments and 13 sections that function in the museum. About four thousand exhibits are exposed in sections such as "Nature study", "Archeology", "Ethnography", "Numismatics", "Victims", "Great Patriotic War", "Azerbaijan, motherland", "Heydar Aliyev-86", "Culture and Art", "Red regiment", "Scientists", "Poets". It could be said that the majority of the exhibits kept and exposed in the museum were gathered from Sharur territory. Clay plate parts, faience plates, stone idol and examples of ceramic decoration, a bracelet, bronze axe, a sward, spear tips etc. related to about II-III millenniums BC are especially valuable.

The Middle Age Azerbaijan culture is well known by its carpet-making art. Examples of carpets, rugs, decorated bags, saddlebags, and sacks in the museum testify about the history of this handicraft. Necklaces, amulets, earrings, belts, bracelets and other woman adornments related to the period from the middle Ages until XIX century are very attractive. Such implements as wooden plough, plow, threshing board, etc. are striking examples of agriculture. The saz of deceased ashugh Nabat from Sharur, ancient ney, zurna, bag-pipe, fife and other musical instruments are exposed in the culture section. Photos, albums, honorary diplomas, prizes and other documents reflecting performances and tour journeys of famous folk dance group of the region "Nurani" in Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and other countries are valuable exhibits of the section. Also, Red challenge banners of all Union and the republic presented to the cultural department of the district in soviet period are also exposed this section.

A rich section in the second floor of the museum has been dedicated to life and activities of national leader Heydar Aliyev. There is a great exposition of photo-materials related to great leader’s visit of Sharur land during his journey to Nakhchivan in 2002. "Great Patriotic War" and "Victims" sections reflect heroic braveries of Sharur land children in war. Sections dedicated to National Heroes of Azerbaijan Maharram Seyidov, Sayavush Hasanov, Kerim Kerimov are demonstrated here. Portraits, photos and works of the scholars, poets and writers from this region are exposed in "Scientists" and "Poets" sections.
