Gosha Gala Gates – One of the main entrances to Icheri Sheher is Gosha Gala Gate (Shamakhi Gate). Gosha Gala Gate (XII century) is surrounded by entrance to old city, fortress walls with height of 8-10 meters and width of 3-3.5 meters. In 1868 military governor of Baku addressed to Caucasus Military Department in order to destroy the fortress wall to abolish it as a military defense fortification and renovate the city. Thus second fortress on the outside was allowed to be demolished. In 1886 in the meeting of Duma this issue was discussed for the second time and meeting decided to install the gate of Zulfugar khan on the second fortress wall destroyed next to Shah Abbas gate on the first fortress wall. Thus today’s second gate facing Youth Square was built. After that several entrance gates to Icheri Sheher were built. The main entrances to Icheri Sheher were Gosha Gala Gates and Salyan Gate. This was because of caravan roads. Trade caravan coming from Russia entered Icheri Sheher on the Shamakhi side, that is, through Gosha Gala Gates and left from Salyan Gate. Also trade caravan coming from Iran entered through Salyan Gate and left through Shammakhi gate. The gates are finished with arcs. Construction date in Arabic alphabet and the symbols of the city – protuberant images of head of ox and lion are carved on the arc. Historians believe that these symbolic images suggest that ox is the chief, lions are his guards. During restoration works in the middle of 1959 on northern side of the fortress walls an inscription was found and it indicated that fortress walss of Baku were built in circa 1138/1139 with the instruction of Shirvanshah Manichohr III. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3BcaUtS4X0
