Statue of A. S. PushkinPushkin was a prominent representative of Russian Romanticism and is considered to be the greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Pushkin is known in Azerbaijan since 20-30s of XIX century. Every event related directly or indirectly with Pushkin has been in the center of attention in Azerbaijan. Mirza Fatali Akhundzade was one of the first people who immediately expressed their regret to the death of Pushkin. His poem named “The death of the poet” was translated into Russian by Bestuzhev-Marlinskij. The bronze statue of the poet was erected in Baku on October 21, 2001. The author of the statue is well-known Russian sculptor, academician Yuri Grigoryevich Orekhov. The erection of the statue was a joint project of Russia and Azerbaijan and dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the poet. President Heydar Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Nikolai Ryabov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Azerbaijan participated in the opening ceremony of the monument.
