Khojavend city

Khojavend was founded within the regions of Martuni and Hadrut in 1991, after abolishment of Nagorno Karabagh Autonomous Region. Area is 1,458 km². Khojavend toponym consists of two words – “Khoja” and “Vend”. Mean of Khoje in Turkic is “teacher”, Vend – is “generation, descendant”. The region consists of lower mountainous and in the east sloping plain. Mainly consists of yura, cretaceous and anthropogenesis sediments. It has marble field. Climate is dry mild hot. Rivers: Kondelenchay, Gozluchay, Guruchay and etc. belonging to Araz basin. Chestnut and brown mountain-meadow soils widespread i te area. Main part of plant cover contains semidesert and dry steppe plants. It has bushes and broadleaf forests. Animals are fox, jackal, rabbit, mouse-vole, partidge, pigeon and etc. Region is located in the foothills plain, in side of Aghdam-Fuzuli motor road. The region has natural resources such as construction materials and minerals, forest strips and fresh water resources. A 1,000-aged and a 2,000-aged Eastern planes with the diameter of 600 sm, and height of 25 m were protected as a natural event. Besides, 100-year “azat” trees, with the diameter of 24 sm and height of 12 m, belonging to third period, recorded in Red Book were protected here. Khojavend region is mainly economic region. Main economic spheres are animal-breeding, wine-growing, poultry-keeping, grain-growing, melon and gourd growing and vegetable growing.“Alban” church in the 5km of Tugh village belonging to V century, Alban churches in Tugh village belonging to XII-XVII centuries, Alban graveyards (I-V centuries), Demrov holy, Dagdagan holy place, place in Salaketin village, Jijim holy place in Khojavend village, ancient Alban graveyard in Garadagli village, Bahmanli sacred place in Bahramli village, Seid Reza cupola, Yel sacred place in Garadagli village were destroyed by Armenian invaders, savagely. One of the ancient monuments of Azerbaijan glorifying it in the world, Azikh cave with the length of 190 m, locating 900m above sea level, with limestone belonging to the oxford-Cimmerian period, is located in near Fuzuli region, in 1 km southeast from Azikh village. Taglar cave also has a special significant. This cave is located in the south of Taglar village, 850 m above sea level. Length of this cave is 22 m.Kojavend region was occupied by Armenian invaders on October 2, 1992. THE area of the region was underwent completely ecological terror. Oak-trees in the forest with the area of 25.5 thousand ha were cut and carried, natural forest around the Khonashen River was perished. Besides, in Yelli Gadik area, the trees planted for protection of motor roads to Fuzuli were also cut. The regin has two city-types settlements and 38 villages.
