South gate (Gabala) - Defense walls of the ancient castle of Gabala town involves attention with its grandiose panorama at first glance. Keeping its primary appearance, the south part of the walls is especially magnificent. Main entrance of the castle is also from this side. The gate has not survived itself. Supposedly, it had been 10-14 m high. Gigantic watch towers on the flank sides of the gate are in good condition. Some restoration works were carried out in some parts for the purpose of strengthening the foundation in the middle of 20th century. Foundation part of the castle walls have been built from four-corner shaved big stones, while the upper parts are from burnt bricks. In the construction there have been used 15 kinds of bricks in different sizes. Brick masters have been able to erect a rare example of architecture here. Rich and motley architecture style of watch towers once more proves this uniqueness. Four watch towers have remained in the south wall of the castle. They all are in semicircular form. They are 10-14 m high, of 6-8 m diameter. Thickness of the walls is 4 m. 70 burnt bricks rows have been used in watch towers. In the middle of 80s F. Gadirov attempted an investigation in the south part of castle walls. Archeological excavations in the surroundings of the castle gate revealed numerous earthenware graves.
